Zirconia or metal-ceramic crowns? What decides the choice
The differences between zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, e.max (lithium disilicate) and veneers; which is preferred for which tooth, and how they compare in strength, aesthetics and lifespan.

On front teeth and in the smile line, zirconia or e.max looks more natural than porcelain-fused-to-metal because it transmits light, and it does not leave a grey line at the gum margin. On back teeth all three are strong enough; the choice is made at the examination, taking into account the remaining tooth structure, biting forces, clenching habits and budget.
When is a crown needed?
A crown covering the whole tooth is made for teeth that have lost too much structure to be filled, that have had root canal treatment, that are fractured or that have shape or colour problems. The crown material determines both appearance and durability.
The options
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)
A metal framework inside, porcelain outside. Used for decades, strong and economical. Its limits: because the metal blocks light the tooth looks more "opaque"; if the gum recedes over time a grey line can appear at the margin; rarely, metal allergy.
Zirconia
A metal-free, white, high-strength ceramic framework, either layered with porcelain or made as a single piece (monolithic). Because it transmits some light it looks natural, is well tolerated by the gums and leaves no grey line. On back teeth, monolithic zirconia is among the most fracture-resistant options. Its limit: on front teeth where the highest aesthetics are expected it may not be as translucent as e.max; it must be well polished so as not to wear the opposing teeth.
e.max (lithium disilicate)
All-ceramic with the highest light transmission — hence the most natural result on front teeth. Its strength is lower than zirconia; used for single crowns and short bridges, not for long bridges.
Veneers (porcelain laminates)
Not a crown but a thin porcelain layer bonded only to the front surface of the tooth. Very little tooth reduction; used for colour and shape corrections. More: Cosmetic dentistry.

Factors that decide the choice
- Position of the tooth: Aesthetics first for teeth visible in the smile (zirconia/e.max); strength first for back teeth.
- Remaining tooth structure: Very weak teeth are reinforced with a post and core and given a stronger material.
- Clenching (bruxism): Monolithic zirconia and a night guard; e.max is avoided.
- Bridge length: Zirconia or metal-ceramic for bridges longer than three units.
- Gum biotype: A metal margin may show through thin gums; metal-free options are preferred.
How long does a crown last?
Care matters more than material: decay at the crown margin, gum disease and clenching are the commonest causes of failure. With regular check-ups and interdental cleaning, crowns last 10–15 years and beyond. Crowned teeth can still decay — the crown protects the visible part of the tooth, not the margin or the root.

Does zirconia yellow? A ceramic surface does not take up stain; deposits at the margins are removed by polishing.
How many visits? Usually 2–3: impression, try-in and cementation. Digital scanning shortens the impression stage.
Can the tooth under a crown hurt? Vital teeth may be sensitive in the first weeks; if it persists and turns into throbbing, root canal treatment may be needed.
